Miss West Africa UK to aid African charities

For the first time since its inception three years ago, all the proceeds from this year's Miss West Africa UK (MWAUK) will be donated to various charities across Africa a statement just issued by the pageant's organisers has announced. MWAUK which also supports its resident charity the Joshua Tree Foundation's Ripple Scheme has been showcasing contestants representing countries from the West African region but had never reached out to the mother continent where many charities and NGO's are strapped for cash. According to the statement signed by MWAUK's Director Bridgette Chalu the winner of this year's contest will also represent the UK at the next Miss West Africa International billed for December 2012 in Free Town Sierra Leone. Miss West Africa UK 2012 will be officially launched on Saturday 7th July 2012 at the Nottinghill Harbour Club.

Last Flight To Abuja in cinemas from 29 June

Obi Emelonye's "Last Flight To Abuja" that premiered in London on Friday goes on general release in the UK on 29 June. A statement just issued by the producers of the suspense-filled film based on real life events and dedicated to the victims of the recent Lagos and Accra air disasters stated that the premier which drew in excess of 1300 people "will now be released across London on fifteen screens".

"We did the right thing to go ahead with the premier and we will continue to remember the departed", the statement said adding that "we will do all we can to raise the issue of improved air safety in Nigeria". The cast and crew of the film were overwhelmed by uncontrollable fans on Friday night when the film starring Nollywood's highest paid actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, hard man Jim Iyke and Hollywood star Hakeem Kae-Kazim amongst others had its world premier at London's Troxy cinema. Udinese player kidnapped in Warri, Nigeria

The Nigerian footballer Christian Obodo has been kidnapped and his captors are demanding a ransom of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Euros for his release. The 28 year-old  Eagles' mid-fielder plays professional football with Udinese Calcio club of Italy. He was cruising in his car whilst on a visit to his home town of Warri - Delta State of Nigeria when five armed men forced him out of his vehicle yesterday.

Tanzanian actress in murder scandal

The trial of Elizabeth Michael aka Lulu - girlfriend of late Tanzanian actor Steve Kanumba over his alleged murder will begin on 18 June in Dar Es Salaam. The case was adjourned after a brief mention at the Kisutu Magistrate's court on Wednesday after prosecutors said their investigations were still in progress. Kanumba died in April this year after a mysterious domestic scuffle with girlfriend Lulu who is also a local film star. Lulu says Kanumba tripped and fell during the fight but critics believe she may have struck him on the head.
