Uncle Phil of Fresh Prince is dead

James Avery, the actor who played Will Smith's Uncle Phil in the Fresh Prince sitcom has died.  According to TMZ the 65-year-old actor died on new year's eve with his wife Barbara by his side after complications following open heart surgery.

The news was broken by Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Avery’s on-screen son Carlton Banks, and Twitter was soon flooded with well wishers paying tribute to the beloved US actor. Leading the trail of tributes was Will Smith's wife Jad Pinket Smith even though the Fresh Price himself had yet to make a statement.

Jada said in her tweet: ‘Happy New Year everyone! I was hoping to start the new year differently but we have lost yet another friend. James Avery who we all lovingly know as Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince has passed Our condolences to aunt Florence (his mother), Miss Barbara (his wife) and all those who loved him. Rest in peace James.'
